After months of uncertainty on the status of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), a possible watering down or entering into play by default of the regulation, the European Commission, European Parliament, and the Council of the European Union have found an agreement to delay the EUDR by one year.
On December 23, the 12-month delay of the EU Deforestation Regulation was confirmed and published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
The key amendments include:
The updated regulation, including the 12-month delay, enters into force on December 26, 2024.
Despite these amendments, businesses should not use the delay as a reason to defer their compliance efforts. The revised timeline provides companies additional time to prepare and enhance their compliance systems. By acting now, operators and traders can gain a clear market advantage, avoiding the risks of last-minute preparations.
EUDR compliance is not something that can be achieved overnight. It involves multiple phases that stretch over weeks to months - each requiring time, coordination, and iteration. With the delay in force, businesses now have the chance to address EUDR due diligence in a more structured and effective manner.
Starting compliance efforts early on offers businesses multiple advantages over competitors:
Businesses can build robust and scalable compliance systems by addressing potential risks early on. In contrast, companies that postpone due diligence will face pressure as the deadline approaches, making supplier engagement, data gathering, and verification more challenging.
Although small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may have until 2026 to comply with the EUDR, many will face earlier pressure from their large partners and buyers.
Large companies, needing to comply by 2025, will prioritize suppliers that can guarantee deforestation-free sourcing. SMEs that delay compliance risk losing valuable business relationships as enterprises seek out compliant sourcing partners to meet their own regulatory obligations.
Rather than waiting until the deadline approaches, SMEs can benefit from early compliance by positioning themselves as reliable, future-proof partners for larger companies.
